September 11 (Tentative plans) Presenter at City of Colfax's celebration honoring Pioneer Aviator Robert Fowler (1884-1966) Why?

Who was this Fowler fellow? He hailed from San Francisco and Gilroy, California. On September 11, 1911 aviator Fowler was the first to fly an airplane across the San Francisco Bay. He landed in Sacramento and Auburn, CA, which est. new aviation record of traveling the farthest in one day by plane = 128 miles! The next day, Sept. 12th, at about 10:05 AM, Fowler crashed into the top of a pine tree in Alta, CA (near Dutch Flat and today's Hwy 80) but miraculously survived. His almost totaled aircraft was taken to Colfax where the town's folks gave Fowler succor. He and his engineers rebuilt the Cole Flyer, keeping the same engine and same wheels but that was about all. On Sept. 22, Fowler took off again flying eastward. Many more crashes but he was the cat with 999 lives! On February 17, 1912, Robert Fowler became the first person to fly and airplane from the West Coast to the East Coast. This is only an introduction about that Fowler Fellow.
